Ice Maker Repair in Dallas–Fort Worth

Ice makers fail more than any other part of a fridge, and the cause is usually upstream: water, filter, valve or temperature. Here's how to narrow it down.

By symptom

What's your ice maker doing?

No ice at all

Usually behind it
The water supply is off, the filter is clogged, the inlet valve has failed, the ice maker module is bad, or the freezer isn't cold enough. Most ice makers need the freezer near 0°F.
Check first
Check that the shutoff arm or switch is on, that the freezer is cold, and that the water dispenser (if you have one) runs at full strength.
What we do
We test the valve, module and freezer temperature and replace the part that stopped the ice.

Small, hollow or misshapen cubes

Usually behind it
Low water pressure, a filter past its date, or a valve that's partly clogged.
Check first
Replace the filter. If the dispenser runs slow too, check the supply line behind the fridge for a kink.
What we do
We check pressure and flow and replace the valve or line if needed.

Ice clumped or jammed in the bucket

Usually behind it
Ice that sits unused melts a little and refreezes. A failing auger motor or a freezer that warms up during defrost does it too.
Check first
Empty the bucket, break up the clumps and use the dispenser every day or two.
What we do
We test the auger motor and the defrost system.

Water under the ice maker or on the floor

Usually behind it
A frozen fill tube that sends water off target, a leaking inlet valve, or a split supply line.
Check first
Look at the fill tube at the back of the ice maker for a plug of ice.
What we do
We thaw and fix the fill tube, replace the valve or the line, and check the freezer temperature.

Ice frozen up in the door compartment

Usually behind it
On many French door fridges the ice maker sits in the fresh-food door, and a failed seal, heater or fan lets frost build until it stops.
Check first
Turn the ice maker off and let the compartment thaw with the door open, with towels underneath.
What we do
We find the reason it iced (seal, heater, fan or drain) so it doesn't build back up.

Undercounter ice machine slow or making cloudy ice

Usually behind it
Scale on the evaporator plate, a dirty filter, or a drain or pump problem.
Check first
Check the water filter and look for white crust on the parts you can see.
What we do
We descale and clean the machine and test the pump, valve and sensors.

Water line and filter

Most ice problems start behind the fridge

The ice maker depends on a steady water supply. A saddle valve that's partly closed, a plastic line that got kinked when the fridge was pushed back, or a filter that's a year old will all show up as bad ice before anything else. Change the filter every six months, and use a braided or copper supply line with a real quarter-turn shutoff.

Fix or replace?

Inlet valves, fill tubes, filters and ice maker modules are some of the most common and least expensive fridge repairs.

Repeat freeze-ups in the door compartment are worth fixing at the root, not just thawing. We'll explain what's causing yours.

Types we work on: Freezer ice makers, door-mounted ice makers on French door fridges, and undercounter ice machines.

Questions

Ice maker repair questions

When does a new ice maker start making ice?

Usually a day to get a full bucket. Throw out the first couple of batches.

Why is my Samsung ice maker freezing up?

Frost buildup in the ice compartment on the fresh-food door is a known issue on several French door models. We find out which part lets it build up and repair it.

Do you work on standalone ice machines?

Yes, undercounter residential ice machines. Give us the brand and model when you book.

Can I keep using the water dispenser?

Usually yes. If water is leaking, turn off the supply valve behind the fridge.

Is the ice maker covered by the 90-day warranty?

Parts we install and our labor are covered for 90 days.
