By symptom

What's your oven doing?

Gas oven won't heat, or takes an hour

Usually behind it
The bake igniter. It can still glow orange but no longer draw enough current to open the gas valve, so the oven lights late or never.
Check first
Watch through the window after you start a bake. A glow that lasts more than a minute or two with no flame is the classic weak igniter.
What we do
We test the igniter's draw, replace it and check the valve and the oven's temperature.

Electric oven won't heat

Usually behind it
A burned-out bake or broil element, often with a visible blister or split. Less often, a relay on the control board or a wiring terminal that burned.
Check first
Try broil. If broil works and bake doesn't, the bake element is the first suspect.
What we do
We replace the element and check the terminals and the relay that feeds it.

Runs hot or cold

Usually behind it
A temperature sensor out of range, a weak igniter on gas models, or a calibration setting someone changed.
Check first
Put an oven thermometer on the middle rack at 350°F and wait 20 minutes. Many ovens let you offset the setting by up to 35°F in the menu.
What we do
We test the sensor against its spec, check the igniter or element, and recalibrate.

Trouble after self-clean

Usually behind it
The door won't unlock, the oven is dead, or it shows a code. The heat of a clean cycle can take out a thermal fuse, the lock motor or the control board.
Check first
Let it cool completely, then turn the breaker off for a minute and back on.
What we do
We test the lock assembly, fuse and board, and replace the part that failed.

Convection fan dead or loud

Usually behind it
A failing convection fan motor, or a fan blade rubbing the back panel.
Check first
Note whether the noise happens only on convection settings.
What we do
We replace the fan motor or blade and check the convection element.

An error code on the display

Usually behind it
Most oven codes point to a sensor, a door lock or the control board. Some just need a power reset.
Check first
Write down the exact code and the model number before you call.
What we do
We look up the code for your model and test the part it points to before ordering anything.

Self-clean

Use self-clean less than you think

A self-clean cycle runs the oven around 800 to 900 degrees for hours. That's hard on the door lock, the thermal fuse and the control board, and an oven that quits right after a clean cycle is a pattern every repair tech knows. Wipe spills while they're fresh, use the steam-clean setting if your oven has it, and don't run self-clean the morning of a holiday dinner.

Fix or replace?

Igniters, elements, sensors, door locks and fan motors are the bulk of oven repairs, and they're worth doing.

Control boards on older ovens can cost enough to make you think. Wall ovens are a different story: replacing one means matching the cutout, so repair usually wins.

Types we work on: Freestanding and slide-in ranges, single and double wall ovens, convection and steam ovens, gas and electric.

Questions

Oven repair questions

Is it safe to use a gas oven that lights slowly?

A slow-lighting oven can let gas build up before it lights with a whoomp. Stop using it and get the igniter checked.

Do you fix wall ovens?

Yes, single and double. Some have to come out of the cabinet to reach parts, and we'll tell you that up front.

Can you fix an oven door that won't close right?

Usually. Bent hinges and broken hinge springs are common, and they're replaceable.

My oven's clock works but nothing heats. What is it?

On electric ovens, often an element or relay. On gas, usually the igniter. The tech confirms it with a meter.

Does the $150 service call come off?

Yes. When you go with the repair, the service call is free.
