Microwaves

Microwave Repair in Dallas–Fort Worth

Over-the-range and built-in microwaves are worth fixing, because pulling one out leaves a hole in the kitchen. One warning before the list: don't open the cabinet yourself. The capacitor inside holds a dangerous charge even when it's unplugged.

By symptom

What's your microwave doing?

Runs, but food stays cold

Usually behind it
The magnetron, the high-voltage diode or capacitor, or a door switch.
Check first
Heat a cup of water for one minute. If it's barely warm, the high-voltage side has a problem. Leave the inside to us.
What we do
We discharge the capacitor, test the high-voltage parts and replace the one that failed.

Sparks or burn marks inside

Usually behind it
A greasy or burned waveguide cover, chipped paint on the cavity wall, or metal in the dish.
Check first
Look at the small panel on the side wall. If it's dark and greasy, that's often the spark point.
What we do
We replace the cover, touch up or repair the cavity, and check the magnetron.

Completely dead

Usually behind it
A blown internal fuse. On many models it blows because a door switch failed, so the switch gets replaced too.
Check first
Check the breaker, and try another appliance in the same outlet.
What we do
We find what blew the fuse and fix that, not just the fuse.

Turntable won't turn

Usually behind it
A worn turntable motor or a broken coupler under the tray.
Check first
Lift out the glass tray and the roller ring and set them back so the tray sits on the coupler.
What we do
We replace the motor or coupler.

Buttons don't respond

Usually behind it
A worn touchpad membrane or a control board fault.
Check first
Unplug it or turn off the breaker for a minute to reset it.
What we do
We test the keypad and board and replace the failed part.

Vent fan or light out (over-the-range)

Usually behind it
The fan motor, a light socket or a thermal switch. Some over-the-range units also turn the fan on by themselves when they sense heat from the cooktop.
Check first
Try the fan on every speed and replace the bulb with one of the right type.
What we do
We replace motors, sockets and switches.

Over-the-range

Two appliances in one box

An over-the-range microwave is also your range hood. It has its own vent fan, light, grease filters and, on many models, a sensor that starts the fan when the burners get hot. Clean or replace the grease filters every few months. A clogged filter makes the fan work harder and lets grease reach the electronics.

Fix or replace?

Door switches, fuses, turntable motors, light sockets and fan motors are cheap fixes on any microwave.

For a magnetron or board on a countertop unit, the repair can cost close to a new one, and we'll say so. On built-in and over-the-range units, repair usually wins.

Types we work on: Over-the-range, built-in, drawer and wall-oven combination microwaves.

Questions

Microwave repair questions

Do you repair countertop microwaves?

Ask when you call. Most countertop units cost less to replace than to repair, and we'll tell you that honestly.

Is a sparking microwave safe to use?

No. Unplug it and leave it off until a tech looks at it. Sparking can damage the magnetron and the cavity.

Do you fix microwave drawers?

Yes. Drawer models have their own drawer motor and latch, and we work on both.

Why is my microwave fan running by itself?

Many over-the-range units turn the fan on automatically when the cooktop below gets hot. If it runs when the stove is cold, a sensor or board is suspect.

What does the warranty cover?

90 days on parts and labor.
