By symptom

What's your fridge doing?

Fresh-food side warm, freezer cold

Usually behind it
Cold air comes from the freezer. If the evaporator fan stops, or frost chokes the coil because the defrost heater, sensor or control failed, the fridge side warms up first.
Check first
Listen for the fan inside the freezer when the door switch is pressed. Look at the back panel in the freezer for a sheet of frost.
What we do
We test the fan motor, defrost heater, thermostat or sensor and control with a meter, and replace the part that failed.

Frost building in the freezer

Usually behind it
Steady frost on the back wall means the defrost system isn't melting it off. Frost on the food near the door usually means a torn gasket or a door that doesn't close by itself.
Check first
Shut the door on a dollar bill and tug it. If it pulls free with no drag, the gasket isn't sealing there.
What we do
Defrost parts get tested and replaced. Gaskets get swapped and the door gets leveled so it swings shut.

Water on the floor

Usually behind it
A frozen or clogged defrost drain sends melt water out the bottom. On fridges with ice and water, a cracked supply line or a leaking inlet valve does it too.
Check first
Check whether the water is clear and cold (supply line) or shows up after a while with a little debris in it (drain).
What we do
We clear and heat the drain, fix the drain tube clip, or replace the inlet valve or line.

Ice maker stopped

Usually behind it
Low water pressure, a filter past its date, an iced-over fill tube, or a failed ice maker module or inlet valve.
Check first
Change the filter if it's over six months. Make sure the shutoff arm or switch isn't in the off position.
What we do
We thaw and check the fill tube, test the valve and the module, and replace what's bad.

Clicking, buzzing or a loud fan

Usually behind it
A click every few minutes with no cooling is often the start relay giving up on the compressor. Grinding or chirping comes from a condenser or evaporator fan motor.
Check first
Note where the noise comes from: the bottom back (condenser area) or inside the freezer (evaporator fan).
What we do
We replace relays and fan motors, and check the compressor's amp draw to see if it's healthy.

Freezing food in the fridge

Usually behind it
A damper stuck open, a bad thermistor, or a control board reading the temperature wrong.
Check first
Turn the fridge setting one step warmer and give it a day. If lettuce still freezes, it's a part.
What we do
We test the damper, sensors and board and set the temperatures back to normal.

Garage fridges

A second fridge in a Texas garage

Garage fridges and chest freezers sit in some of the hottest air in the house from June through September, and a few older models stop cooling right when the garage gets cold in winter, because the thermostat thinks the job is done. Keep the condenser coil clean, give the unit a few inches of air behind it, and plug it into an outlet that isn't sharing a circuit with power tools. If it's on a GFCI outlet, check that first whenever it goes warm.

Fix or replace?

Most fridge failures are a fan, a relay, a defrost part, a valve or a gasket. Those are worth fixing on almost any fridge that isn't ancient.

It gets closer to a coin flip when the compressor or sealed system is the problem on a fridge that's already 12 or 15 years old. In that case the tech gives you the repair price and an honest read on the rest of the fridge, and you decide.

Types we work on: French door, side-by-side, top freezer, bottom freezer, counter-depth, built-in and column units, and garage fridges.

Questions

Refrigerator repair questions

What will a fridge repair run me?

It's $150 for the service call, waived when you approve the repair. The repair price depends on the part. A door gasket or start relay costs far less than a sealed-system job, and you get the number before we start.

Is my food going to be OK?

A closed fridge holds safe temperatures for about four hours without power, and a full freezer for about two days. Leave the doors closed and have a cooler with ice on standby if it's been warm for a while.

Do you fix built-in and counter-depth models?

Yes, including Sub-Zero, Thermador, Viking and other built-ins, as well as French door, side-by-side, top-freezer and bottom-freezer fridges.

What if it's the sealed system?

If the problem is in the sealed system, the tech will tell you what's wrong, what the fix involves and what it costs, so you can compare it with a new fridge before deciding.

What does the warranty cover?

The parts we install and our labor, for 90 days.
