By symptom

What's your range hood doing?

Fan won't run

Usually behind it
A failed motor, a bad switch or control board, a thermal fuse, or a loose wire connection in the hood.
Check first
Check the breaker, and try every fan speed. If the lights work and the fan doesn't, the fan circuit is the problem.
What we do
We test the motor, switches and board and replace the failed part.

Loud, rattling or humming

Usually behind it
A loose blower wheel, worn motor bearings, or the backdraft damper flapping in the duct.
Check first
Make sure the grease filters are seated and nothing is loose in the hood.
What we do
We tighten or replace the blower, motor or damper.

Weak suction

Usually behind it
Grease-clogged filters, a crushed or long duct run, a stuck damper, or a recirculating hood with a spent charcoal filter.
Check first
Clean the metal filters in hot soapy water or the dishwasher. Replace charcoal filters if yours has them.
What we do
We check the airflow, the damper and the duct connection at the hood.

Lights out

Usually behind it
A burned bulb, a bad socket, or a failed transformer or LED driver.
Check first
Replace the bulb with the exact type listed for the hood.
What we do
We replace sockets, drivers and light switches.

Controls don't respond, or it turns on by itself

Usually behind it
A failed touch control board or a heat sensor that starts the fan when it detects heat.
Check first
Turn off the breaker for a minute to reset the controls.
What we do
We test the board and sensor and replace the failed part.

Grease dripping from the hood

Usually behind it
Filters so full they can't hold more, or grease condensing in the duct.
Check first
Clean the filters and wipe the inside of the hood.
What we do
We check the filters, the duct connection and the damper.

Ducted, recirculating, downdraft

How your hood moves air matters

Ducted hoods push air outside through the roof or a wall. Recirculating hoods filter the air through charcoal and blow it back into the kitchen, so their filters need replacing, not just cleaning. Downdraft vents, the JennAir kind that rise from the cooktop, have their own motor and lift mechanism. Over-the-range microwaves are covered on our microwave page.

Fix or replace?

Motors, switches, sockets and control boards are standard repairs on most hoods, and they cost far less than replacing a hood and redoing the duct.

On a very basic hood with a failed motor, replacement can make sense. We'll price both and let you choose.

Types we work on: Wall-mount, under-cabinet, island and insert hoods, downdraft vents, and pro-style ventilation.
